Amex consumers have reported over 43 official complaints related to Gift or merchant card. Out of the 43 consumer complaints against Amex, 16% were disputed by the consumer (i.e. the consumer was not happy with how Amex responded to their complaint) and 100% were processed in a timely manner. 33% of consumer complaints against Amex resulted in the consumer receiving monetary compensation (e.g. money, cash reimbursement, etc.) and 2% resulted in non-monetary compensation.

October 3, 2016 - Amex - prepaid cards charge the card holder $3.00 per month re regardless of balance after 6 months of issuance. This is seems to violate usery and common sense. The longer Amex has use of the funds the more they make on the unclaimed balances on these cards. April 25, 2015 - I received a prepaid rewards card from American Express as part of a promotion for purchasing an electronics item from an online vendor. I live in Minnesota, where I thought any gift card whether prepaid credit/debit or otherwise would be exempt from service fees.
