Amex Prepaid card department,
Gift or merchant card Fraud or scam California
I received an American Express prepaid gift card in the amount of $50.00 in an unopened and fully sealed package about 2 weeks ago. Today, I opened the package and tried to use the gift card for a purchase only to find that the card contained no balance. I called American Express to tell them about the fraudulent activity and they refused to do anything about it. They said the funds were used and card swiped at the time of the fraudulent purchases. I advised them I had possession of the gift card in its sealed package the whole time, but they still refused to address the problem. They said they treat the cards like cash, but if it were cash, I would have it in hand since it was in my possession the entire time. This is unacceptable for American Express to sell gift cards which are prone to fraud and leave the consumer who had possession of the card the whole time with no alternatives to get their money. On the packaging they even state " Funds replaced if lost or stolen ''. In this case, the funds were stolen and they refused to replace the funds.
