Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Trouble with how payments are handled New Jersey
I am the co-signer for my son 's - private student loans, and I am the primary signer for - Federal loan l, all - loans with Navient. I paid off - of the private loans and the - Federal loan. The Navient website for the paid off loans reflect a paid-off date of - -, 2016. Due to a delay getting the checks to the correct address within Navient, regular monthly payments occurred which in turn, caused the amounts paid to be greater than the outstanding balance. Consequently, there are now credit balances on the - loans I paid off. So I called Navient to inquire about how and when I would receive the refunds of the overages. What I was told is that it would take - to 60 business days for me to receive the refunds. As I found that answer unbelievable, I called Navient more than once to verify that answer, asking each time I called I why it takes so long. The answers were somewhat vague, but in essence they said they had to make sure the account was paid off, after which they would need to generate a paid-off letter to mail to me. The refund amount owed to me is over $1300.00. How absurd to have such a long waiting period! What that does is to give them the use of my money and prevent me from having the use of my money. During the - to 60 day waiting period, they still collect monthly payments since the accounts are not officially closed, which means the refund amounts will continue to grow. If I stop paying, then I run the risk to being tagged as late or worse, which in turn affects my credit rating. In my opinion, their delaying tactic is a form of thievery, particularly since they will not pay me any interest for having the use of my money during the waiting period. What do you think?
