Checking account Account opening, closing, or management South Carolina
I opened a checking account at BB & T in - SC in -. The terms of the account were no maintenance fees and I would receive paper bank statements. Within a short time ( about 4 months ) the bank changed the terms so that to avoid a maintenance fee I could not receive paper statements. So I continued with electronic statements only. In - - and - - the bank withdrew from my account a maintenance fee of $12.00 per month. I called customer service and reported that I had an account that was not subject to a maintenance fee. The csr told me that the account I had was no longer available and so I changed to another account which did not have a fee as long as I had a personal mortgage account with the bank. I have - personal mortgage accounts which originated in -. The bank did not refund the $12.00 for two months in -. Then in - - the bank again charged a maintenance fee of $10.00 per month. I called customer service and the csr refunded the fee. She said that the bank had decided not to waive the fee for
csr refunded the fee. In - the csr that I talked with told me that the bank had a limit of $35.00 that could be refunded in a year. After that conversation I received a voice mail from a bank csr stating that the bank had sent me a notice in - - that the mortgages would not longer be accepted as an exemption from a maintenance fee on my checking account after - -, -. I have never received any notice from the bank indicating that the terms of my checking account had changed or that my checking account had been discontinued. The bank does not send notices to me in the mail. It posts notices online to my accounts, but never any changes to my checking account. I believe the bank is guilty of fraudulent practices designed to entice customers to open checking accounts there with terms that are quickly changed in order to extract maintenance fees. I have statements for my account ending in -, but they contain the full account number so I am not attaching them.
