Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Trouble with how payments are handled Texas
I made a payment for $10000.00 against my private student loans with Navient ( originally - ). My goal was to make a dent in the principle and continue to make the minimum payment to help reduce the amount of interest I was being charged. However, once I made the payment, my bill was being sent to me with a monthly payment of $0.00. I contacted the servicer and was told that even though I made a $10000.00 payment directly toward the principle, they were going to treat it as if I paid my loan ahead and bill me $0.00 for years until the $10000.00 had been utilized. I saw this as a tactic for them to collect more interest by me not making any additional payments toward the principle. Therefore I continued to make what I was told over the phone prior to making the payment my minimum payment would be. However, when I reviewed my file, i saw they were applying my payments to interest instead of the principle. I called again and they said even though I had a $0.00 balance every month, they were still billing interest on the remaining balance on the loan and applying my extra payments to the interest they accumulated that month first instead of the principle. I requested that if i have no required payment every month then I wanted my payments applied directly to the principle and was told No.
