In an attempt to mitigate any sort of credit issue, I called Navient Student loans ( with whom I have private and federal loans with ). I recently lost my job, and was attempting to put my loans into forbearance or deferment. Navient charges $50.00 per loan for a 3 month Forbearance period. For the - loans in my name, that was a total of $150.00. It is $150.00 of which I dont have at the moment due to my loss of employment. Prior to this, I had always made my payments on time. If by some happenstance, I were to need more time, I would need to pay an additional $150.00 to extend out the forbearance period for an additional 3 months. After hours of talking to different operators and managers, Navient 's official position is that they do not offer any non-payment options for their private student loans. As I am now unemployed, this will likely affect my credit rating, and snowballs into a larger debt problem that I may not be able to climb out of for several years at best. I wish to warn any who read this to STAY AWAY from PRIVATE student loans, and Navient especially, as they are extremely unfriendly towards their borrowers.
