Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Trouble with how payments are handled California

In -/-/- I went back to school to get my - degree from the University -. I took out $35000.00 in astudent loan from - - and $5000.00 as a Stafford loan. I started paying the loan back in -/-/- after I graduated. Over the last 16 years I have never missed a payment - made at least the required payment each month - Often more that the required payment. For the first 8-10 years the payments went to - - then the loan was transferred to - and three years ago it was transferred to Navient. After 16 years of paying an average of $ -/month on a loan at 8.25 % I have paid over $67000.00 and yet the statement I just received says I still owe over $21000.00 on the personal loan and $3300.00 on the Stafford. I do not see how this is possible.
