Vehicle loan Problems when you are unable to pay Pennsylvania

I have had santander usa as my car loan for 3 years and yes ive made plenty of late payments but i think something is really wrong i purchased the car for - and its been 3 years ive paid lump payments upto - and just to catch up well my car was repo 'd about 4 days ago i got a letter stating i owe - and that once its sold im responsible for the remaining how is it thats its been 3 years and i owe more then what i purchased it for and its only worth - as of today cause i tried to get rid of it just not to have this sitting on my credit but i think something is not right at all i need help i think they have robbed me of all the monthly payment i did submit cause it just looks like i paid interest every single month for 3 years please help.
