I financed a vehicle through Ally Financial in 2016. I made my first payment on -/-/2016 which was not due until -/-/2016. In addition to the scheduled payment I made an additional payment to be applied to principal. However, the additional payments keep getting applied to the future monthly payment instead of the principal balance. I 've called Ally and spoken to customer service and a manager. Each time I get assured that the account will be updated and that future excess payments will be applied to principal. However, this is not occurring, I have to keep calling each month to make sure that they apply the excess payment to principal. My account transaction history is a mess because of so many reversals and postings. The account running balance is not displayed in the transaction history. I believe that Ally 's practices are illegal because by applying the excess payments to the future payment instead of the principal they get away with collecting a higher amount of interest based on a higher balance.
