Improper use of my credit report Received marketing offer after opted out Florida
I 'm not sure that this is the correct option for this particular complaint. Here is the issue : I was told by a local government job placement training to check my credit report to enhance my chances of getting a job. I was told to go to -, and that it was a free service. Indeed, when you first log onto -, it says that it is completely free ( see screen capture attached ). All throughout the application process, it says that the service is free. I do n't remember ever going to the official Experian website. But I do remember agreeing to paying $1.00 to find out what my credit rating was. Being that I am unemployed and have no substantial source of income, that is all I could afford to pay. Today, Experian withdrew $21.00 from my checking account. When I called them, they said it was because I had logged on to -, which is owned by Experian, and that I had agreed to pay the $1.00 charge, but that since I did not cancel my membership after 7 days,
So, I went directly to the Experian website and at the top of that site, it says that you can get your Credit Report for $1.00. No mention is made regarding a " membership '' or a $21.00 charge. In that same section is the call to action button, which says " Get Your Credit Report and - Score. '' If you click on that button, which you normally would after reading what it says above it, you will have missed what it says only if you scroll down that page, in fine print - that the $1.00 charge is in fact a membership fee that turns into an additional $21.00 after 7 days. This is HIGHLY MISLEADING AND FALSE ADVERTISING, especially if it is linked to the - site. Also in the process of filling out the information for -, I remember reading that, if you make false statement to Experian, you will be prosecuted by the Justice Department. I do n't remember where exactly I read this, but I was shocked because it gave the impression that credit report agencies are part of the federal government, which is misleading. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
