Synchrony Financial Credit card department,
I have an account with Synchrony Financial that allows for normal purchases and promotional purchases. I spoke with - -, a customer service representative, and - -, a manager. When speaking with them I was initially refused the a copy an updated credit agreement, and then told that it is the bank 's policy to apply payments to deferred promotional balances prior to non-promotional balances, unless a customer calls to direct a payment. Moreover, I was instructed that it could take up to 30 days for them to provide an updated credit agreement. By allowing non-promotional purchases to compound at a high interest rate, I feel the company is taking advantage of consumers everywhere. No where in the monthly statement does it say I should call to direct the payment, but they do routinely send reminders to use the card at other merchants. The non-promotional balance carried an APR of 29.99 % while the promotional balances were deferred if paid in full within the promotional balance. When I asked if the previous payment can applied to the non-promotional, I was informed only future payments can be directed. I am also bothered that a manager told me " what 's the big deal and the amount of interest is less than the deferred interest so not to worry about it. '' If this happened to me, and they affirmed this is standard policy then imagine the damage this company causes to people who really ca n't afford it or does n't understand the effect this practice has on their financial future. The damage would be a product of the number of customers times the number of months it would take pay off all.
