Synchrony Financial Credit card department,
I got some calls from Synchrony regarding my - furniture account. It turns out my scheduled payments had run their course and I was 2 weeks -/-/-. I told the man on the phone that I wanted to pay - and he pressured me to pay - as well. I asked if I had incurred a late fee and he stated " You were late on your payment so obviously there was a late fee. '' I said that I would pay - and - right then if he could waive the late fee. He then stated that IF I paid even more money THEN he would see if he could waive the late fee. I repeated back to him to make sure that I understood. I asked him " So, if I pay more than I owe for - AND - then you might be able to waive the late fee? '' He stated yes, that if I paid a total of $100.00, only $11.00 more than my - and - combined payments, then he could waive the approx. $37.00 late fee. I repeated back to make sure that I was really understanding him ... .that if I paid
I paid $100.00 then he would waive the approx. $37.00 late fee. Ultimately I said I would log in and pay the $100.00 when I got home ( I was driving ) and he then made me promise that I would pay the $100.00 and then, once my payment was received, the late fee of $37.00 would be removed from my account. I have actually NEVER had this kind of negotiation over a late payment / fee and especially where I was being told that I had to pay not only my - missed payment ( it is - - today ) but ALSO my UPCOMING payment AND some extra in order to waive a fee because " it was better for my account ''. ( I only owe just over $600.00 on the card ). Is this legal? it seems like it should not be. Thank you. -
