Checking account Problems caused by my funds being low Maryland

I was charged a monthly maintenance fee on an account that was once listed as " Free Checking ''. I never received notice of the account changing from a " free '' account to a " standard '' account - despite what the bank is saying. The new " standard '' account charges a fee of $ -/mo if you do not meet certain criteria ( $500.00 minimum balance ; $500.00 minimum monthly deposits ; or - years of age ), which my account did not meet. I did not observe this account for some time due to not needing to use it, and in that period of time I lost $ -+ in fees to the bank. I tried to work with the bank in getting any of that money returned to me as no services were rendered, but I was not able to get anything from them, as they claim that the monthly fee is necessary for them to operate a dormant account.
