I experienced discriminatory practices at the CarMax Dealership in - -, Illinois on Monday - -, 2015. I called the CarMax to inquire about a vehicle financing. I spoke with an agent by the name of -. I am an attorney in the Illinois area and sought to purchase a vehicle from CarMax. I have very good credit noted to be in a range over -. As such this would qualify my for some of the more competitive interest rates. When offered credit by the Carmax, I was told that I would only be eligible for a 13 % interest rate from available lenders. I have seen several other individuals with similar credit scores receiving much more competitive rates from the same establishment. I investigated the available rates for scores such as mine and found that they should not be offered above 3-4 % in my area. I was further told that if I added an additional down payment, I could lower my rate. Two days later I went to a reputable dealership and was given an interest rate of 2.2 % with the same credit score and a better quality vehicle. I certainly would not return to this chain in future. I have never been offered an interest rate so ridiculously high. Nor have I seen other individuals with similar scores offered such a thing. When I confronted the dealership about the offer, they blamed it on the lender. I see evidence of discrimination here and would like this investigated. I may also be pursing this issue legally with the Illinois Attorney General.
