Someone opened a fraudulent natural gas account using my first name and social security number. That account was sent to First Point Resources for collections. I submitted a credit dispute with - of the major credit bureaus and they began investigating. During this investigation I worked directly with First Point, providing them verification documents by email as requested, including the FTC 's identity theft affidavit and a copy of the related police report. Eventually the credit bureau responded that the debt collection company ( First Point Resources ) had verified that this account was actually mine. Upset, I called First Point Resources to get an update on the situation. Their representative said that First Point never received a copy of my police report. I was incensed that instead of sending any notice to me that they did not receive my police report, they verified fraudulent information with a credit agency. I then proceeded to send police report and the other relevant documents by email to First Point. It took me sending these emails - for First Point to get them, '' the manager was never available to speak with ( always in a meeting ), and First Point has never in my interaction with them contacted me on their own initiative or informed me about the status of my collection account. All of this could have been avoided if First Point Resources notified me as they are required by Section 5 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act which provides that if an agency declines or rescinds a block, it must notify you. ''
