Citibank Credit card department,
BANK 'S PROCEDURE WHEN ACCEPTING CREDIT CARD PAYMENT. This past week I went to my local Citibank located on - in -, NY in order to make a payment on my Citibank MasterCard. I gave 2 checks to the teller without any problem which were drawn from two accounts I have from another bank. I then gave her cash. At that point, she asked for my ID and asked for my occupation. I was told by the teller that this is Citibank 's procedure for taking cash for any payment. When I questioned the bank manager about the inquiry into my occupation ( I, by the way, have none since I am retired ) I was told that I could avoid the questions by either using the ATM or opening a checking account with them. I told the manager that I wanted the personal service of taking my payment ( s ) and of receiving the receipt. She told me that there was nothing she could do about it. We parted agreeing to disagree. QUESTION : Is it legal to ask for this information when making a payment? I am giving THEM money. If so, why? I 'm handing them cash! I could understand wanting ID for a check. If this is not legal, the procedure needs to stop.
