I asked for verification of the debt within the 30 day window of first being contacted. The collection agency then mailed me what they considered the verification information. I then wrote them again, asking for more information about the alleged debt while I investigated myself. They reported the collection to the credit reporting agencies within one week later, without me even having the opportunity to rectify the debt with it damaging my credit.
