Synchrony Bank sent me a Visa credit card, saying that I have been " upgraded to a new level of gas savings '' for my Chevron gasoline card. I did not request the Visa card and my Chevron card had not expired. When I called them yesterday to ensure it had not been activated and to say that I did not want new credit I was told by both the Representative and his supervisor that, Yes, an account had already been opened in my name. This is not a case of fraud or ID theft. This is Synchrony Bank trying to push credit on me, likely for the purpose of inflating their bottom line. Synchrony Bank has a practice of doing this as it also occurred last year with my - - account, for which Synchrony manages the credit. This is very similar to the - - situation and I am wondering what regulatory entity covers such cases of opening accounts without the permission of the consumer? I would like to file a formal complaint. This is well beyond prescreening and preapproval as they actually sent me - cards and assigned account numbers. They were only willing to " cancel '' the account if I gave them identifying information about myself, specifically my social security number and address, which I was unwilling to do, so they hung up on me. Please let me know how I can file a formal complaint about this predatory practice.
