My --year-old mother incurred a $29.00 charge on her Sears/Citicorp credit card with payment due on -, 2016. She wrote a check ( # - ) on her - - - account for that amount on - -, and mailed it on - -. Sears/Citicorp acknowledged receipt of the check on - -, a full 10 days after it was mailed. The check cleared on - -. As a result of being one day late ( either because of mishandling on the part of USPS or Sear/Citicorp ) my mother incurred a late fee of $31.00. Thinking this was a billing error*, she did not contest the fee. As a result the monthly fees mounted, reaching in excess of $90.00.

She provided me an alternative fax number. On - - I sent the same material to the - numbers I had been given. The company acknowledged receipt in letters to my mother dated - - and - -. I subsequently called Sears/Citicorp and requested to have all the late fees waived. They were unwilling to do so, even after learning of the circumstances ( --year-old cardholder who mailed her payment nine days prior to the due date ). They were willing to waive only one month of fees, leaving me to pay $62.00 to reduce my mother 's balance to -. I understand that, technically, Sears/Citicorp has the right to impose these fees under their agreement with cardholders. However, I find their actions unconscionable. They have potentially damaged the credit score of an - individual who faithfully pays her bills, and have caused her - about the consequences. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - my mother mailed - additional checks to other vendors ( - - - , -, and - - - - - ), each of which cleared her - account no later than - -. On - - and - my mother mailed - checks ( to - - -, Town of -, and - - - ), each of which cleared on - -.
