Citibank Credit card department,
I was mailed a promotional offer by Citibank for a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select Master Card which included an offer for - American Airline bonus miles after making $3000.00 in purchases in the 1st 3 months. I met the purchase requirement, and contacted Citi to ask about the status of the miles. I was told that I do n't qualify for the promotion since I had the same credit card in the past 24 months. I knew there was a restriction on opening and closing cards to keep people from taking unfair advantage of the offer, and it used to be 12 month. It had been 14 months since I last had a similar account with Citi. However, Citi was mailing these promotional offers every few weeks, so I called the Application Line to find out if I qualified. I specifically asked the agent if I qualified for the - mile promotion, and assumed she had access to my account history to confirm eligibility. The agent confirmed that I qualified for the - mile promotion, and that I would receive the miles as soon as I met the purchase requirement. There is no question that the Application Agent told
flyer miles even if the agent promised them. They agreed to go back and listen to the application recording, but stated that it wo n't matter because at the end of the call the agent would have read a disclaimer that overrides any promises made during the call. I understood the disclaimer, which is why I asked if I was eligible for the promotion. I did n't remember exactly how long it had been since I had been a previous Citi customer, so I had no way of knowing whether or not I was eligible. I relied on the Application Agent to tell me - and she said " yes ''. I 'm not an expert on laws governing over-the-phone financial applications, but at a minimum I think Citi is obligated to fulfill the commitments made by their employees. This appears to be a very deceptive practice, with similarities to what - - has been doing to their clients. While there is no cash value associated with these miles, - airline miles could be used for - domestic tickets which could cost $500.00 or more each.
