Citibank Credit card department,
Unsolicited issuance of credit card California
i was issued a credit card thru citibank, a visa card to replace my - costco card without my permission before the due date on the previous card was due for payment. I tried to make payment and was given instructions to call citibank and pay them. I called on four different occasions and could never get thru and then found a number online and waited about an hour before i was able to make payment but still could not cancel card and was told i would have to call another number. I did that and finally got thru to someone to turn off card and started thinking, how is this legal. I never asked for a different company. It seems to me that they should have given you a choice to accept the new company or just pay your bill and they would cancel your card when it became obsolete. I did not want another visa and especially one with a 15+ interest rate. I can see citibank making a lot of money charging interest fees on money that was transfered to their high interest cards with no easy way to pay. I have never had a buisness or credit card company do that before and the letters they sent out were misleading. They kept saying do nothing. I assumed i would get a closing bill with an option to switch. That would have been the right thing to do, instead they did the sleazy thing that pretty much seemed like bait and switch to me. Is there a way to keep companies from doing this?
