Citibank Credit card department,
I had a Macy 's credit card account with a modest $38.00 balance. Unfortunately I did not realize I had missed remitting payment, after a long history of timely payments and responsible account management. As of today ( - ) The payment and all associated late charges had gone up to $140.00. In an effort to be responsible with my credit accounts, I never even activated the new Macy 's card that was sent to me ; I simply made phone-based payments in an effort to pay off my balance. When I called Macy 's this morning to remit full payment on the balance due, they indicated that the account had been referred to collections. I spoke with the collections agent and asked why I had NEVER received an email or a phone call indicating that my account was in jeopardy. Macy 's has both my phone number and email address on file ; in fact, I get no less than - emails per week with advertisements regarding Macy 's sales and merchandise promotions! Their tepid response was that I should have received a paper statement in the mail.
account status. This small balance not only netted Macys over $100.00 in late fees, but the referral to collections is now going to adversely impact my credit rating. Never mind that I was a good customer and consistently made payments on time ; they were happy to let the missed payments add up so they could profit. In terms of how I have resolved this issue, I paid off the card in full, and have closed my account with Macy 's. I also intend to write a letter to Macy 's regarding their handling of this issue, but I hope that CFPB will continue to work with creditors on fair practices that do not adversely impact individuals who have very little recourse besides paying and moving on. A $38.00 oversight on my part should not haunt me forever in the form of a diminished credit score.
