Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Don't agree with fees charged California
First of all, I am the co-signer of a private student loan that my son applied for in 2008. My son began having financial difficulties and I began making payments on the loan periodically and recently paid over $4000.00 to bring the balance down. My son recently died. When I contacted the company to request options for decreasing the interest on this loan, they put me in " forbearance '' status. I did not request this and I did not fill out any form to ask for forbearance. I would like to request a co-signer release given how much money I have paid out on this very old loan. On their website it states " forbearance prior to co-signer release may disqualify me and that a direct debit electronic payment may be necessary prior to requesting co-signer release. I paid $200.00 which is more than requested this month ( my son died only 1 1/2 weeks ago ) so to put me into forbearance status when I made a payment and there were no payments overdue, was unethical.
