I have been a BP Visa credit card holder since -/-/-. This card was a fixed rate, 8.49 % card on all purchases. Around the credit bubble in -/-/--/-/-, I received a notice from BP that gave me - options : 1 ) maintain the low interest rate but now have a minimum payment equal to 5 % of the balance ; or, 2 ) continue with the 2 % of the balance as a minimum, but the interest rate would be variable - and at that time around 14.9 %. I opted for the former, even though at times that made my minimum around $1300.00 per month. That was not a concern for me as I preferred having all that additional money applied to the principal. And, if you reviewed my history, I have never had a late payment in these past 21 years, even when that monthly payment was at or greater that $ -/month. In -/-/-, Synchrony Bank assumed ownership of my account. And, although I am sure I was provided with a communication, it was likely hidden or concealed in a way that I overlooked a drastic and insulting increase. Although all past purchases stayed at the agreed upon rate, all new purchases were 26.99 %! This, despite any delinquencies on my part and with me having no choice in the change in bank from the one I signed on with and whom provided me with a fixed interest percentage to the one now ( Synchrony Bank ) that is obviously taking advantage of some loophole to take advantage of an unknowing and unwitting customer. I have estimated the money lost which is actually a guess of what the increased interest has caused in the form of lesser amounts amounts to principal. Of course, with an ongoing balance this amount will accrue at an astronomical rate compared to my 8.49 % rate that I signed up for and have had in place since -/-/-.
