Other (phone, health club, etc.) Cont'd attempts collect debt not owed Debt was paid District of Columbia

On or around - -, 2015 I cancelled my cable/internet/telephone service with -. I returned my equipment later in the week and received my final bill dated - -, 2015. According to the bill my final balance of $40.00 was due on - -, 2015. On -, - 2015 at - -, while at my place of business, I received a phonecall from a third party collections service saying that - had sent my bill to collections and that this was an attempt to collect a debt. When asked why a debt that had been billed a mere 17 days before had been sent to collections the employee explained that - preemptively - and routinely ) sends all final bills directly to collections. When asked if he thought that was legal the employee agreed that he guessed it was not and that this is - 's regular practice. I gave my contact information to the employee and informed him that I would deal with - directly. After speaking with the third party collections agency I received a second bill dated - -, 2015 that classified the $40.00 as an

due now ''. That bill was received on Friday, - -, 2015. Also, when I signed into my account to pay my bill, I noticed that the online bill noted a due date of - -, 2015. After leaving work I also ran a google search which revealed that many others have experienced similar issues with their final bill being immediately sent to collections and that the uncollected debt '' appeared on their credit report. The bill has now been paid to ensure that I remain in good standing and I am filing this complaint to ensure that - ceases preemptively sending consumers final bills to third party collection agencies.
