Non-federal student loan Can't repay my loan Massachusetts

I had a few private loans with Chase for school, at the University -. It was at a time when I was between the ages of - and -, approximately. I am now -. Not only was I able to obtain these loans without a cosigner, but multiple loans. As a college student with no financial aid or help from family that was a huge deal. I always made payments and was never late. I did however lose my job and get married and leave the country. After being on a series of payments plans, I called the woman who I had been making payments through to let her know of my situation and as if there was a way to put payments on hold or to make smaller payments until I got on my feet. I was being proactive, and responsible. But the woman was cold ( as I would expect, ) and basically gave me - option : to pay off thelarge lump sum or that further legal action would be taken on their end. This Scared me more than anything. What could they do? What would they do to me? I do n't want debt hanging over me, its the worst feeling in the world. Eventually I found out that all the debt was written off and my credit reports took a huge slam. Now I am trying to figure out how to build my credit back up and get those settlements off my reports as well.
