Capital One Credit card department,
In - of 2014, my - year old father entered - at a - near his home in -. In - 2014, his wife closed his Capital One account and left for -. I paid the balance in full and set the rest of his bills up electronically and subsequently managed his finances from my home in -. When I returned to - in -, I discovered a Capital One bill that had been sitting at an unoccupied residence. Apparently no one at Capital One told his wife that there was a recurring charge on the account for a - - newspaper. When I found the bill, I again paid the balance and cancelled the newspaper in order to close the account. Capital One assessed a late fee to the account that I feel was not owed as it was not our fault that Capital One had not advised of the recurring charge nor had they closed the account as requested and they continued to process charges for the newspaper which should have been rejected as it was cancelled. In - when I again returned to - there was another bill which I again paid and marked to close. Every
times including sending an accounting, copy of a Power of Attorney etc. via overnight mail to them in - per their request. I did not even receive the courtesy of a phone call. Instead I got back a short form letter saying the account had been charged off as bad debt and turned over to a collection agency. I am extremely angry about the situation as my father has paid his Capital One bill in full every month since he opened it and has excellent credit. I think this is disgraceful behavior for a credit card company and do not even understand how they can legally continue to add a late fee to a late fee to a late fee until it amounts to almost $200.00. Meanwhile, my father is days, if not hours from death. There is no money left, he is on - and my complaint is on principle as I think it is bullying and unresponsive on the part of Capital One. I would like the fees dismissed and a notice filed with the credit agencies so that his report does not show uncollected debt.
