Amex Credit card department,
Credit line increase/decrease Washington
After - bounced payment in early - -, American Express did not notify me that it was doing an audit of my account. Then, without notice of a delinquent payment or a review pending, it reduced my limit on -/-/- by $1500.00. I am not aware of any contractual provision that allows them to do that. I suspect a possible breach of contract, unconscionability and breach of duty of good faith and fair dealing for this unilateral action. I then called the following day ( today ) to restore my credit. They said over the phone ( - # - ) that if I paid $2900.00, that my limit would be automatically restored within 30 business days. I accepted their offer and made the payment to try to restore my credit. I then found out that they would not be able to do so by the time the reduction would be reported to the credit bureau. I asked her to escalate or accelerate that process and she said that there was no such process and that no such
I then asked the credit bureau reporting division of American Express what I could do and they said that whatever was current as of - -, -, that that would be what is reported to the agency. So, to try to reduce the damage to my account, I paid the entire balance and closed the account. I then called to confirm that this is what would be reported to the bureau ( rather than the reduction in limit ) and they informed me that the newly assessed limit would be reported, together with the closure. I told them that I was promised that the limit would be increased if I made the payment and they sent me back to the credit lending department. That department agreed to escalate the matter and adhere to their agreement to increase my credit limit if and only if I re-opened my account. But that was not a term that I had agreed to. In fact, there was no mention of keeping the account open when the offer to accept payment and re-increase my limit was made. They then offered to escalate ( previously denied ) if and only if I re-opened the account. That is to say, they would only honor their promise if I agreed to re-apply for the same exact credit card and submit to a credit check. This appears to me to be a breach of a duty of good faith a fair dealing, breach of an oral agreement, and misrepresentation.
