Earlier this year, as I was attempting to clean up my credit report, I noticed a couple of adverse items. - of these items was from Wells Fargo. There was an open account with a balance of over $7000.00 from -. There were no late payments and the report indicated that the monthly payment due was $0.00. After investigating, I found out that this was for a car loan I had co-signed for with my now ex-wife about a year before we divorced. I contacted my ex-wife and found out that the vehicle in question had been in an accident, totaled by her insurance company and the balance paid off in it 's entirety. Since no activity was showing on this account since - ( over 6 years ago ), I disputed the item with the credit bureau to have it removed from my report. When the credit bureau contacted Wells Fargo in -, Wells Fargo instead of clearing the account or marking it as paid, they charged off the balance to $450.00 and then " wrote off '' the remaining balance. Whatever they did to " balance their books '' caused an even further adverse affect on my credit report, causing my credit score to decrease - points overnight in -. I contacted my bank about this situation, and they informed me that what Wells Fargo did was illegal, and they gave my the information to contact you.
