Vehicle loan Problems when you are unable to pay California

I purchased a used vehicle from a dealer now out of business. 18 months after purchase car has complete mechanical failure. I called loan company to surrender vehicle and negotiate settlement on acct after they auction it off. Loan company refused to take possession and abandoned with mechanic. Mechanic is now forced to deal with issue. Fear loan co will put this on me even though I surrendered vehicle to them 3 times in 3 days. I do not deny I will owe monies, but expect loan co to try to recoup what they can from car to reduce amount owed. Fear they will not do this because of the effort involved. Mechanic expressed frustration with loan companies lack of professionalism and ethical mannerism.
