Amex Credit card department,
I have had an American Express - card for many years. The traditional - card does not have any interest or service charges if paid if full each month. I use the card daily for every day expenses and pay the card balance in full each month. Recently my husband and I remodeled our home and decided to defer some of those expenses by using the " Pay over time '' option of the card. Today I wanted to pay $1000.00 directly to this portion of the card to reduce the balance that is being charged a finance charge. When I called AME- to do that I was told that any payments are first applied to new charges ~~ which means it would be applied to charges already made but not yet on a statement to pay. Not allowing me to pay directly to this line of credit to reduce the amount being financed seems totally unfair and as a consumer very abusive. I asked for a supervisor and was told the same thing. The only way to pay off this balance is to basically not use the AME- card so that all payments go directly to the pay over time portion, which is at 18 %... I filed a complaint with AME- but expect no response from them. - - --
