Credit card Cont'd attempts collect debt not owed Debt was paid California

My credit report reflects a collection company trying to collect on a debt of $2000.00 in which I did not owe that amount to the original creditor how are they collecting and reporting higher amounts of debt owed on my credit report. They cant collect the debt as the statute of limitation in california is 4 years and they has passed, I recently disputed this same information in which they closed the collection on my credit however it shows closed balance owed of $2000.00 which is incorrect.
