I chose to close a bank account with FirstMerit Bank located in - -, WI. When they gave me the document to sign it showed that only - remained in the account. I asked how that could be and was told of a inactivity fee of - per month. I was totally unaware of this fee. I was told by a customer service person that they send out a notice each month when the account is ready for viewing. I told them I have never received any such email. I did check the account a couple of years ago and the amount shown matched my checkbook balance. I usually come up to Wisconsin for a couple of weeks each year. I did not come up last year due to a death in the family otherwise I would have closed the account a year ago. The customer service person said I wish you had not closed the account, now there is nothing I can do ''. I said that makes no sense and I will pursue the issue.
