Amex consumers have reported over 26 official complaints related to Fees. Out of the 26 consumer complaints against Amex, 23% were disputed by the consumer (i.e. the consumer was not happy with how Amex responded to their complaint) and 100% were processed in a timely manner. 27% of consumer complaints against Amex resulted in the consumer receiving monetary compensation (e.g. money, cash reimbursement, etc.) and 0% resulted in non-monetary compensation.

December 6, 2016 - I had opened up a prepaid Serve Amex to use for emergencies. I put $200.00 dollars on when I opened and was just about to add more money when I saw that they had been charging me an almost $6.00 fee every month. This was not disclosed when I opened the account. I am going to complain to them about itto them, but am pretty sure that they will not refund the fees. I was under the impression that this was like an Amex Gift Card that is not allowed to charge monthly fees. October 3, 2016 - Amex - prepaid cards charge the card holder $3.00 per month re regardless of balance after 6 months of issuance. This is seems to violate usery and common sense. The longer Amex has use of the funds the more they make on the unclaimed balances on these cards. Charging $36.00 in fees annually on a $50.00 gift card is obscene and lacks any ethical justifications.... |
August 28, 2016 - I received an American Express prepaid rewards card as a rebate for a purchase. When I made the purchase ( through - ) they indicated there would be a rebate ( $9.00 ), but not that the rebate would be in the form of a card. Therefore, no disclosure as to the cards fees or expiration date were made. When I received the card I noted an expiration date of -/-/-. No worries plenty of time to use the card. July 5, 2016 - My sister bought an American Express gift card, which is considered a prepaid card in - 2015 for my birthday. Unbeknownst to her and myself since we did not read the fine print, there are $5.00 of fees each month on this card. May 28, 2016 - There were no fees associated with this account for over a year and I had stopped using it often. On - - I then noticed that I was being charged a monthly fee that began in - 2016. May 19, 2016 - Received $50.00 prepaid card AM- when bought cell phone 2 years ago. Exp. -/-/- on card. Went to use yesterday, and find out they have been charging $4.00 per month fees since - 2016, and now I have almost no money left. They claim they emailed with info. January 7, 2016 - American Express Gift Cards charged $60.00 in inactivity fees on a $100.00 balance card, received in 2005 and never activated. I have some repsonsibility for losing track of the card. - of the balance in fees is excessive. Amex reversed the last $ - monthly fee and reissued a card with a $40.00 balance. I 'm not satisfied. September 25, 2015 - I enrolled in American Express has premier shipping plan with a fee of - $ so that I do n't need to pay shipping charges. I enrolled in 90 day trial. They are not supposed to charge during the trial but they charged - $ when I called them they said they will refund the fee when I cancel within 90 days. April 25, 2015 - I received a prepaid rewards card from American Express as part of a promotion for purchasing an electronics item from an online vendor. I live in Minnesota, where I thought any gift card whether prepaid credit/debit or otherwise would be exempt from service fees.
