I contacted the collection agency as per the notice. The person I spoke to was rude and tried to push me into making a payment right then and there. When I explained my situation ( grieving the bill with my insurance company ) he tried to make it sound like I was refusing to resolve the debt because I was not going to make a payment that very day.
