CREDIT REPORTING COMPLAINT AGAISNT CHASE In 2011 we found ourselves buried under a mound of debt and enlisted the services of a debt consolidator. All of our debts were amicably settled accept one, Chase Account # -. We did not find out until recently it had not been settled. Chase had sent us a - which we thought closed the account. What we found was that while we received the - Chase continued to show the debt was open and had monthly payments due. We also found that two offers had been made to the third party representing Chase to settle the account but the offers had been refused. All this came up because I needed a loan to replace my heat pump and had no credit. I contacted Chase 's customer service and was told the " - was issued as a courtesy to the IRS to inform them Chase was no longer attempting to collect the debt and they still considered it open ''. As I read the - it clearly states " Summary of

again and was given the same story even when I pointed out the - reported the discharged amount as income to me and made it eligible for a tax write-off for Chase. At this point I requested to speak to a supervisor. The gentleman was pleasant and understanding but said there was nothing he could do. He offered to have his manager contact me if I would like and I accepted the offer. Late one Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks later I got a call from - who identified himself as the manager, gave me his full name and employee number ( which I did not write down ). After a pleasant conversation he agreed I had a reasonable complaint and checked with his system which showed our debt had in fact been closed. Nothing was open and nothing was due. Yet he could not get this removed from our credit history as it was the responsibility of another group. I had reason shortly after this to visit the IRS and while I was there asked about the meaning of the -. I was told it did in fact mean the debt had been discharged and if Chase refused may want to consider contacting the FDIC ( who 's phone number he gave me ). I did and they directed me to you, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The only reason I can see for Chase to refuse to remove this ex-obligation from the credit report is pure and simple spite. By issuing the - they have reported the discharged debt to the IRS as income to me and have provided themselves with a tax write-off if they choose. There seems to be no reason for this to continue to show up as an open debt on the credit report. Am I missing something? A copy of the - is available upon request.
