I called a number of banks simply to learn the mortgage rates offered by the institutions. A number of them ( e.g. -, - - -, - ) opened up loan applications in my name and ran full credit checks without asking whether they could. I now have multiple sets of loan documents and account numbers for applications I never requested. I only wanted mortgage rates to figure out where I was going to secure my mortgage.
