Good evening, I 've been paying my private student loans to Navient, formerly - -, on time every month for two years using autopay in order to participate in a reduce interest rate program. I 've never missed a payment or called to defer payments. I recently received tax bills ( - old, - from an amended return for this year ) and it 's going to take a considerable portion of my disposable income over the next couple of months to pay these bills. I called Navient yesterday afternoon to ask for a two month suspension of payments while I handled my tax obligations. The representative on the phone told me that since my loans were private, there were no options available. No forbearance. No deferments. I advised her of my situation and she understood that my obligations to the IRS and State were of priority, but stated that their hands were tied. I


I would be put in default almost immediately after missing the first payment since these loans were private. I honestly just wanted a little flexibility in my payment terms while I took care of these tax bills and they have refused to help. I 'm now looking at missing my first payment ( and going into their proclaimed automatic default ) on the -/-/-. It 's ludicrous to say " we ca n't help you '' when I 'm making a - dollar per month payment ( 75 percent of which goes to interest alone ).
