My sister was encouraged to take an exorbitant amount of funds out for tuition and room and board, at - University in -, - She graduated with her degree and $250000.00 in debt for -. She has been employed since graduation making $30000.00 or less every year. My mother ( her cosigner ) is now burdened by paying over $2000.00 a month for these loans. She is a nurse and is nearing retirement and is probably not going to be able to afford to retire because of these payments. There is no way my sister can afford $ -/ month when she is only making $ -/month before taxes. After paying taxes and medical insurance, she is taking home less than the minimum payment amount of these loans. There is no option for income based repayment because they are Private loans, not federal.
