Medical Communication tactics Threatened to take legal action New Mexico
On -/-/15 at - PASI ( - ), a medical debt collection agency called me. It was my debt and I have paid it off. The problem lies in the fact that when I was contacted the first time, the lady said that if I did not pay in 10 days, the debt would hit my credit and they would garnish my paycheck. I called back the next day and verified that they were a collection agency and not the billing department of the hospital that I went to. Upon verification that they were indeed a collection agency, I informed them that I knew my right under federal law and that they were not allowed to report the debt or garnish my wages at this point in time without taking me to court. This is when I was informed that they would give me 30 days to pay instead of the 10 days originally quoted. Now, it was my debt, i legitimately owed it and I have since paid it. However I do not appreciate the unnecessary threats.
