Credit card False statements or representation Attempted to collect wrong amount New Jersey

I recently contacted Portfolio Recovery Associates to pay off a debt I had in collections. As I began to pay off the account in full. The supervisor got on the phone and said I had another debt with this company from 2005 from - Bank and I should take care of it. I reluctantly paid $350.00 to this comapny and later after looking over my credit report realized that this account was no longer on any of the credit reports because it was removed. I contacted Portfolio Recovery by email and phone and they said their was nothing they could do about it. I am aggravated that this company lied about this bill and they have my money. this is definitely unfair and I believe i should be refunded the amount of $350.00 because this account I am no longer liable for.
