Non-federal student loan Disclosure verification of debt Not given enough info to verify debt Florida

I am writing on behalf of my teenage son, who just turned - and was a student at the University - - Florida in -. He stopped going to school temporarily until he could decide what he wanted to study. He knows he owes the university money, but he received absolutely NO communication from the school regarding his debt, not even a notice that his debt would go in to collections if he did not submit a payment. My son was first contacted by PHONE from the - - - collections agency of -, NY. This was his first ever dealing with debt and neither I or his mother were home to advise him. Instead, the company told him over the phone they needed his credit card number and to pick a date to start taking money out of his account. About a week later, on or about - -, he received a debt collections letter and a few days after that they removed $360.00 fro his bank account.

he did n't make a payment. Both the University - - Florida as well as the - - - - - ( ConServe ) took advantage of my son and did not provide him with an adequate opportunity to make arrangements to pay back the university. Furthermore, the collections cost on his $3300.00 debt was $1000.00 - approximately one-third of the cost of his debt. NO credit card company, no mortgage lender, no bank I know of levies a 30 % penalty on debt, especially without attempting to make an arrangement to pay. The university should be ashamed of themselves for this practice. My son simply did not know how to react and this is his first " real world '' challenge as a young adult.
