Wells Fargo & Company Student loan department,
Non-federal student loan Dealing with my lender or servicer Trouble with how payments are handled Minnesota
Wells Fargo - neglects student loan Borrowers who wish to elect to make additional payments automatically to their student loans. With automatic payments, Borrowers have the ability to manage the total cost of their loan by paying more than the minimum required payment each month thus reducing total interest paid over the life of the loan. Wells Fargo does not allow Borrowers to increase the amount of their automatic payments, instead requiring Borrowers manually make additional payments each month either through manual add-on payments or through their Bill Pay service. Both options force borrowers to schedule each additional monthly payment manually. Without the ability to automatically schedule payments above the minimum required payments, Borrowers are much more likely to pay the maximum interest charges over the life of the loan unless they remember to separately make additional payments each month. This serves to minimize pre-payment risk for Wells Fargo and investors in their Student Loan asset backed securities. However, it is also a contemptuous disservice to its Borrowers, many of whom are recent college graduates working to establish prudent debt servicing plans. Borrowers should be given the option to increase automatic payments towards their Student Loans. By neglecting to provide this option, Wells Fargo is, at best, discouraging their Borrowers from managing their total interest costs or, at worst, scheming to charge their customers as much interest as possible.
