A company called NetSpend has twice sent me a debit card in the mail that I did not ask for. From what I understand, they gather people 's personal information, create a debit account in their name, and send them a debit card in the mail. The debit card had a phone number to call to activate the card, but said to just ignore the offer if I did not want it. It bothers me that a company opened a financial account in my name that I did not ask for. No, I did not activate the card, but I believe they would have had to create an account beforehand to be able to send me a card in the mail that was ready to be activated. I think this practice should be illegal. And I believe that it could increase identity fraud if there are financial accounts being created in my name that I am not aware of.
