JPMorgan Chase & Co. Credit card department,
On - -, 2016, I applied and was approved for a Chase credit card. The terms of my sign-up bonus were : " - - with a required $2000.00 spend in the first 3 months. '' On - -, 2016, I contacted Chase via Secured message asking them to change the terms of the sign-up bonus. I found a sign-up bonus that works better for my goals. The new terms were : " - bonus - after the first $2000.00 in purchases within 3 months of approval, - bonus - after $10000.00 in purchases within the first year, - bonus - after $20000.00 in purchases within the first year ''. On - -, 2016, I received a reply via Secure message that stated that " We are pleased to confirm that we will honor your request to receive the tiered - bonus - enrollment incentive. '' The message reiterated the new terms and stated that " After you have exceeded $10000.00 in purchases and $20000.00 in purchases, please contact us at that time and we will add an additional - bonus - to the account. '' On - -, 2016, Chase removed this message from my - - -. On
$20000.00 spending, you would be awarded - bonus - ''. By that time, I had reached the $10000.00 threshold and asked Chase to issue - points. The representative advised me to wait until I reach $20000.00 so that they can submit that request for the full amount. On - -, 2016, I contacted Chase again. They verified that I reached the $20000.00 threshold. However, they changed their mind and denied my request for additional points. They retracted the written promise that they gave me on - -, 2016 and verified again on - -, 2016. I understand that it is up to Chase whether or not to match a better bonus. However, once a promise is made, it must be followed. I acted upon that promise and tried to spend on the credit card as much as possible to hit the required threshold. By doing that, I gave up on other opportunities given me by competitors. I would have spent significantly less on my BA Chase card, had I not received the written promise, not once but twice. If they were unwilling to extend the bones, they should 've done it on - -. Instead, they did a classic " bait-and-switch '' : they gave me a promise, I acted upon it, and then they retracted once I fulfilled the terms of the offer they extended.
