I went on a leisure trip to - -, - in late - / early -. On - -, I was in need of cash and proceeded to a nearby atm. The bank happened to be -. I tried - different machines at the atm unsuccessfully and just had a friend spot me cash for the night. Upon my return to the United States, I noticed that the - attempted atm transactions had cleared and registered as shopping transactions at a clothing retail store in - -. I had not done any kind of shopping let alone stepped foot in a retail store. I called JP Morgan Chase and filed a fraud complaint on - -. I was given a temporary credit of $430.00 pending the outcome of the transaction. On - -, I received a letter in the mail from Chase that the credit had been reversed because they could not verify any incidence of fraud on the account because my debit card had chip and PIN protection and could not ever be breached. I called the fraud claims
Upon my own personal investigation and just typing " chip card fraud - - '' in - search, the very first link was to - in which other travelers like myself had the same experience, under a term called " Skimming ''. Basically, something might have been attached to the machine that took all my information, despite claims by Chase that the card could never be cloned. This shows gross incompetence and negligence on the part of Chase, as there have been articles in major national publications and consumer finance websites that Skimming has been on the rise despite the introduction of chip and PIN cards.
