I cosigned for a private student loan -/-/- for my brothers wife. They split up soon after and divorced -/-/-. She has paid the loan and been behind on payments as well. The loan has gone from - - to Navient. It 's has been - years. She had also put the loan in deferment, I believe for 2 years .This I did n't know about until recently. She is grossly behind on her payments and Navient is coming after me. My credit score has taken a nose dive. I had excellent credit - now to -. I should of been released from this mess along time ago. The divorce alone should of been enough. I have never made any payments for her and we do n't stay in contact. I have n't spoken to her in 9 years. Now I have to contact her to see what has been going on. This loan should of been on its way to a pay off point or fairly close. Her balance is -. What has she done in nine years? Now I 'm paying for it literally. I have not paid a bill late in - years and I took pride


my bills. Navient needs to work with her instead of going after someone else for payment. She was making little payments like - to - a month claiming that is all she can afford. Now is n't that better than the loan going into default and getting nothing at all. I know one thing I want to be released from this loan and I wo n't be making this on time payment. I have never made one payment for her and I wo n't start now. I have helped my daughters in the past with student loans and they managed to pay them off themselves. I 'm not related or know this person anymore. Help what can I do? Is there anything? My ex sister in law has agreed to try to have me removed from the loan. Not much of a chance in that I 'm sure.
