Navient is my private loan provider. I returned to school in -/-/- to pursue a - degree while quitting my job. While I was able to defer payments on my private loan while in school, I quickly lost any kind of protection once I completed my degree -/-/-. I have been going through a protracted interviewing process with a handful of opportunities in the public and private sector and have otherwise been struggling while working as a consultant. My earnings for - were low enough to allow me to qualify for Medicaid, but this does not factor into my dealings with Navient. Despite having extremely limited capacity to make payments on my loans, I am being repeatedly told that I have regular payments. It is distressing to know that I have protections afforded to me with my public loans, but that I have no such protections when dealing with Navient. Compounding this issue is the lack of knowledge I had when taking out this private loan when I was - ; had I known of the lack of protections and repayment flexibility, I would not have pursued this loan option. I am asking for help because the risk of being taken to court and defaulting on a loan would cause significant hardship for me. I have every intention of restarting payments upon achieving employment, but Navient is not interested in extending any significant protections to me as an account holder. I find it perplexing that there are little protections in place for people who earn below the federal poverty level.
