I have multiple credit cards with multiple institutions, and I 'm fairly well-versed on how they work and their terms and conditions. Presently, I 'm carrying a promotional 0 % balance on - of my Chase cards, and as part of their T & C, any purchases I make on the card will accrue interest immediately with no grace period. I made a small purchase last Fall and immediately paid it off. Sure enough, I was charged interest, but it was a small amount and I their customer service to clarify. They agreed to refund the interest as a courtesy and instructed me to make payments on any purchases immediately to avoid future interest.

On my next statement, the card 's $49.00 annual fee posted, and I was charged another $0.00 in related interest charges from my single transaction two months prior as well as interest on the annual fee. I did n't think you could accrue interest on bank-imposed fees, but Chase apparently does. When I contacted Chase the first time it happened, the representative I spoke with could n't provide me an answer as to why this is their policy. Let me clarify further, it 's not that he could n't give me an answer, he had absolutely no response when I questioned Chase 's motives as to why they 're discouraging their customers from continuing to use the card in the event they carry a promotional balance. When I contacted Chase this time via online messaging, all I received was a regurgitation of what already happened with no actual explanation as to how the interest is charged and why it keeps growing exponentially.
