Closing/Cancelling account California

I had a Walmart credit card I would use it and pay it off to help my credit score then I stopped using it for one month after I paid it off and when I tried using it they said the card was no longer active. When I called they said I had n't used it for a while so they closed my account and if I wanted I could re-apply but when I asked if I re-apply does that mean it checks my credit again she said yes so to avoid another inquiry I did n't. But I do n't like how they closed my account without even telling me just because I had paid it off and not used it.
